Style | H&M Khaki Trousers

Monday, 30 March 2015

I feel like I haven't done a fashion posts in forever but I've actually been so excited about Spring I'm hoping to do more fashion posts in the next few weeks. I miss the layering that comes with Winter, but my style has always been so simple that I end up just throwing on a few things before heading out the door. This is definitely one of those outfits and it's ridiculously comfortable too.

I've managed to reign in my spending a lot over the last few months and instead I've been reaching for lots of pieces that have been neglected in my wardrobe for a while. I fell in love with these khaki trousers from H&M when I saw them at the end of last summer, but I've never worn them until now. It's a bad habit of mine to have drawers filled with clothes with the tags still on so I'm trying to slowly change that. Speaking of unworn purchases, I might as well fess up to the fact that these shoes have only made it out of the house twice too. Now we're no longer in winter and there's no risk of my exposed toes getting frostbite I'll definitely be strolling around in these shoes more often.

Review | Glowwbox March 2015

Sunday, 29 March 2015

I've been feeling pretty rough the past week, so the March Glowwbox* which is all about pampering couldn't come at a better time.

I've posted a couple of times about Glowwbox already, but for anyone that's new to my blog, Glowwbox is a beauty subscription service for women of colour. It costs £15 per month + P&P and the company's aim is to make beauty shopping for women with darker skintones easier. As well as a subscription service they also have a beauty boutique and a free makeup guide about common makeup mistakes.

Inside my Glowwbox this month was 6 products, 2 were full size - Willow Organic Glowing Body Oil (full size £37/100ml), Lavera Mint Pore Refining Moisturising Fluid (full Size £10.90/30ml), Konjac Facial Puff Sponge (£7.99), S5 Vitality Mask (full size £42/75ml), Philip Kingsley Daily Damage Defence Extreme (full size £15/125ml) and Nablus Soap (£5.90).

I thought I'd round up my favourite products here rather than talk about everything included. I love the Nablus Soap in Soft Honey and Konjac Sponge, which I've been using together. I've been using more natural products to cleanse my skin recently, especially my face, as this has definitely helped ease my monthly breakouts. The Konjac Sponge is made of natural vegetable fibres and you can use it alone or with a little product to really cleanse the skin. The original Konjac Sponge was included here but The Konjac Sponge Company have a few variations of their sponge, including one made with bamboo charcoal made specifically for spot prone and oily skin. The sponge can last from 2-3 months so when it needs replacing I'll probably pick up the charcoal version. I already have a cleanser I love (Dr Bronner's Magic Soap) so I reach for the Nablus Soap when I want to switch it up. All Nablus Soaps are made with Extra Virgin Olive Oil this version is also made with honey and Coconut Oil which leaves my skin hydrated after use.

Another product I love from this month's Glowwbox is the Philip Kingsley Daily Damage Defence Extreme. I've always had good experiences with Philip Kingsley products but I've never tried this before. It's a leave-in conditioning spray which protects against heat damage. It's made with over-processed, porous and Afro-Caribbean hair-types in mind. My hair is braided up at the moment and I rarely use heat anyway so my wig, which I use heat on almost daily, is benefiting from having this product amongst my haircare arsenal.

As with all of the Glowwbox Editions I've had so far the products included are always high quality. The March Pure Pampering Edition definitely feels indulgent and it's been great to actually pamper myself recently. Weirdly, despite being a beauty blogger I rarely take much time out to apply a face mask or relax in the bath. So much emphasis tends to be put on my hair I can forget about the rest of my body! This month's Glowwbox has reminded me it's important to take time out to really pamper myself from head to toe.

The Pure Pampering Edition is available on the Glowwbox website until 3rd April

Realash Eyelash Enhancer | Final Review

Saturday, 28 March 2015

About 3 months ago I started using REALASH Eyelash Enhancer (£49)* on my top lashes (introductory post here). By applying a little serum to the base of the lashes nightly, REALASH claims that the enhancer can lengthen and thicken lashes in 3 months. Even though I missed a few days during this time and a whole week in February the product has still worked well for me.

My lashes are noticeably longer and thicker and I saw these results within a few weeks of using the product. My lashes used to fall out a lot prior to using this product regularly too and this has drastically reduced. The condition of my lashes haven't improved much since reporting my results of using REALASH Eyelash Enhancer after one of month use (post here), but that may be because I kept forgetting to use the product. Consistency is key with products like this so it's a shame I didn't always remember to apply it.

Before & After - Without Mascara

Before & After - With Mascara

As you can see from the pictures, this product does work which I wasn't expecting initially. Using it regularly is crucial however, and to maintain the results you have to keep using the product. Forgetful people like myself will find that the product may not be as effective as you need to use it every night.

The Realash Eyelash Enhancer is also pretty pricey. It costs 5 times more than any other product I have to lengthen my eyelashes (like false eyelashes, mascaras etc.) so if I hadn't tried it I probably wouldn't buy it. However, now knowing that this product does actually work would make me more inclined to buy it in the future. I've seen a lot of eyelash enhancers available currently and when they can range from anywhere from £5 to £90 I know I can rely on REALASH to deliver results.

It's worth also noting that the bottle is pretty small at just 3ml but it does last. I still have some product left after 3 months and the company claims one bottle can last 4-5 months. The quality and amount of the ingredients packed into this tiny little bottle is good too. I'm convinced the natural ingredients in REALASH which promote healthy hair growth, like collagen, aloe and various fruit extracts, are the main reason this actually works.

This product is perfect for anyone that wants to lengthen their natural eyelashes without relying on falsies or special mascaras and can slot this into their everyday beauty routine. I'm going to continue to use REALASH (hopefully more consistently) to see if my eyelashes get even longer and thicker.

FOTN | Red Lips & Winged Liner

Wednesday, 25 March 2015

I've been wearing the same red lip and black eye liner combo for years. This is always my go-to look when going out and it may not be very adventurous, but it suits such a range of occasions I rarely stray from it.

I tend to prefer darker red lipsticks over orange-y or pink-red tones and this shade is from the L'Oreal Paris Color Riche collection. I don't own a lot of L'Oreal Paris makeup, but I've increasingly picked up more and more Color Riche shades as there's a great range of colours to suit different skintones.

I usually prefer bronzed cheeks with red lips but I was kind of in auto-pilot mode when doing my makeup and applied this everyday coral GOSH blush from my bronzing pie without thinking. This blush is super pigmented so I just went with it but I don't mind the result.

RPGShow Rihanna Full Lace Wig [Video]

Sunday, 22 March 2015

For the past couple of weeks I've been wearing this wig which I bought from RPGShow. RPGShow are a hugely popular wig company, which is the main reason I decided to buy this wig.

Wig Specifications:
Hair Length: Straight 12"
Hair Colour: #2 Darkest Brown
Hair Texture: Yaki
Lace Colour: Light Brown
Cap Construction: Cap 3, Glueless Lace Cap
Cap Size: 1

I bought this from the RPGShow Sales website as it was a lot cheaper for the same wig I wanted on the main RPGShow website. Also with the exchange rate it worked out at around £179. Admittedly, it was still an expensive purchase for me as I usually don't spend a lot on my hair, but I weighed up the other options available (both in the UK and abroad) and this seemed to work out as a reasonable price for the expectations I had. I wanted something that looked realistic and like it could be my own hair and it's really delivered. I love the quality too so in all it's been a worthwhile purchase for me and I'm hoping the wig should last me a long time.

There's more info on the wig in this video on my YouTube channel:

Review | Motions Deep Conditioning Masque

Thursday, 19 March 2015

I got the Motions For Natural Textures Deep Conditioning Masque (£6.95/236ml)* in December's Glowwbox last year. It took me a while to get around to trying this, mostly as I have so many deep conditioners amongst my stash which I absolutely love already. I really wasn't expecting much of this conditioner either so I was pleasantly surprised with how well this works on my hair.

The consistency is pretty runny which fooled me into thinking this wasn't going to do much for my hair. As a result I was pretty heavy-handed when I first applied this product and I really didn't need to be. I've found this conditioner to be very hydrating and subsequently, since that first application, I haven't needed to use a huge amount to reap the benefits. I've now almost completely run out of this conditioner but I'll definitely be snapping up another soon.

FOTD | Contoured Lips

Sunday, 15 March 2015

I've seen more and more makeup looks across the web recently extend the concept of contouring to lips in order to make them appear fuller. It's nothing new but we've probably got celebs like Kylie Jenner to blame for many of us lusting after a bigger pout recently. My lips are pretty full naturally but I love that subtle contouring can define my lips and add an extra dimension to a relatively simple makeup look. To create this look followed my usual everyday makeup routine (video here) but contoured my face a little to tie in with the effect on my lips.

I used ELF Long Wear Lip Liner in Bark for the edges of my lips. I followed my natural lip line, but if you want to make yours appear much bigger draw curved angles slightly above your natural lip line. I then blended this line inwards to make it softer and more natural and then filled in the rest of my lips with KIKO Pencil Lipgloss in shade 11 which is slightly lighter in colour. I then finished my lips with a little Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick in Beige Trench in the center.

A quick sidenote is I'm wearing my wig in these shots which I mentioned in my last FOTD (here). I got my real hair braided up during the week which has kept it flat enough to get this wig to fit over nicely. I aim to continue wearing my wig for another couple of weeks but I must admit I am missing my own hair already. It's been really strange wearing my wig in public and a lot of friends and colleagues thought I'd actually cut my own hair. I had some pretty interesting reactions when I told people it was a wig! I'll do a full post on the wig details soon.

What makeup looks have you tried lately?

Hair Update | Texlaxed Transition Progress

Sunday, 8 March 2015

I've neglected to do many updates on my hair on my blog for the past few years and I think the main reason is my 'transition' (growing out my straight relaxed hair) hasn't been very straight-forward.

I first started 'texlaxing' (using a relaxer to purposely underprocess my hair so it's still has some texture) by mistake in 2011. The result was a frizzy sort of straight which I hated initially but had to admit that it was much stronger and less damaged than my bone straight relaxed hair.

Along the years I've continued to texlax but to a lesser degree each time. As a result my roots have slowly become more textured and closely resemble my natural hair texture. I've been cutting my hair a lot lately as I'm happier with how my roots look but I'm still realistically about a year off the length in which I would comfortably 'big chop' and get rid of all of my straight ends. My hair looks a total mess with all the different textures but it's very slowly coming together.

Taking pictures to document my progress has been difficult as the texlaxed texture is quite tightly coiled and I can never seem to be able to capture exactly what it looks like on camera. My hair also grows at different rates and is looser in some areas. If I had to put a number on it I have a minimum of 6 inches of curly roots in the middle and back whereas around the edges I have about 4-5 inches when my hair is stretched.

You can get an idea of my current progress from the pictures above, but I think it'll be easier to tell how far along I am with my transition when I start to make more dramatic cuts in the coming months.

What have you done with your hair lately?

Review | Glowwbox February 2015

Wednesday, 4 March 2015

I was excited to receive the February Glowwbox 'Handbag Heroes' Edition* this week. Glowwbox is a monthly beauty subscription service for women with darker skin tones. This is the second time I've tried one of their boxes (my review of the December 2014 'Party' Edition can be found here). There's quite a few subscription beauty boxes in circulation currently but I love the concept of Glowwbox in particular and it's one of the few that appeal to me. The subscription costs £15 per month plus £3.95 postage and packaging, which is a similar rate to some of the other beauty boxes available. So far my experience of Glowwbox has been positive and it’s introduced me to quite a few brands and products I haven't tried before.

Inside this box are 6 products, 5 of which are full size - Lavera Natural Lipstick in Berry Violet or Brown Sugar (£11.95), Benecos Natural Mono Eyeshadow in Mokka (£3.95), Lavera Basis Sensitive Organic Lip Balm (£3.45), Beauty UK Nails in Red Royale (£2.99), Primavera Energising Hand and Nail Cream (full size 50ml £13) and Vintage Cosmetic Company Small Makeup Bag in Floral (£6).

I rely on on-the-go makeup (and a bag to carry it in). I’ll often be found perfecting by brows or adding a touch of rouge whilst on the commute to work as I'd rather get a few extra minutes in bed than spend it putting my face on. The floral Vintage Cosmetic Company makeup bag is a cute design and the size is good enough to hold most of the essentials without taking up all available space in your handbag.

I love lip products, so I was excited to try Lavera goodies inside February’s box. The lip balm contains a whole host of natural ingredients and it feels like a real treat for my lips. The natural lipstick in 'Berry Violet' is also a really beautiful colour. It's a grape purple that would suit a range of tones but would especially compliment darker skin. I'm not sure if it's just the one I have (as I've not tried this brand before) but I found the lipstick formula to be really stiff. Applying this straight from the bullet is difficult (as the texture sort of smears on the skin) though once it's on it won't budge, at all. The Benecos Eyeshadow shade is also purple, but a different tone to the lipstick. I'm not sure how often I’ll reach for this shade and I imagine I'll probably reserve it for when I'm looking to try something new.

Hand cream is definitely an essential for most handbags but I rarely carry around cream anymore (I just pinch my friend's if I need any). As a result I can’t see myself paying £13 for the full size of the Primavera Hand & Nail Cream which is only 50ml anyway. I can see why it's on the pricey side though as the ingredients are pretty impressive and all natural.

As this is the February Edition there was a Valentine's slant on the theme of the box and the red nail polish by Beautyuk was a nice touch. I love the colour which is a bright red with gold shimmer. I haven't tried it yet though so I'm not sure how good wear or coverage is.

As with the first Glowwbox I received I think the contents of the box are great value for money. The RRP of two products seems to equal the cost of the entire box which is always a plus (providing you like the products of course). This was the February Edition, but if you'd to get your hands on this box it's still available on the Glowwbox website until the end of this week.
